3 Ways Nestlé is helping to save Sabah's Kinabatangan River

Kinabatangan RiLeaf Project

Nestlé Malaysia and Yayasan Sime Darby’s Kinabatangan RiLeaf Project has helped protect Sabah’s Kinabatangan River and the wildlife in the area since 2011, and here is how we do it:

1) Restoring the Environment

Annual General Meeting

Since 2011, over 680,000 trees have been planted, covering 2,400 hectares of degraded forest areas along the lower Kinabatangan River in Sabah.

The areas which we have helped restore form a buffer zone which aims to filter soil sediments and agricultural fertilizer run-offs which flow into the river. This allows the Kinabatangan to repair itself over time.

2) Supporting Communities

Annual General Meeting

The Kinabatangan RiLeaf Project supports local villagers along the Kinabatangan River through its KAPOK programme (Komuniti Anak Pokok Kinabatangan).

Through KAPOK, local villagers generate additional income by planting seedlings of trees native to the environment, which the Kinabatangan RiLeaf Project then purchases for reforestation efforts.

3) Preserving Biodiversity

Annual General Meeting

Through our tree planting initiative, Nestlé ensures that the Kinabatangan River continues to be a Corridor of Life for Sabah and home to its unique biodiversity.

The restored zones form a wildlife corridor which allows wildlife to thrive and forage in their natural habitat while reducing the conflict between humans and wildlife.

The Kinabatangan River is an important ecoregion and is home to over 250 bird, 50 mammal, 20 reptile species and 1056 plant species. It is also one of only two places on the planet where 10 primate species including the Orang Utan, the Proboscis Monkey and the Borneo Gibbon can be found.
